چکیده
Materials and methods: A total of 100 patients (51 females and 49 males) diagnosed with esophageal cancer but not yet operated on were included in the study. Th e mean age of the study population was 62.03 ± 12.4 years. Patients treated with radiotherapy or chemotherapy were excluded. Th e control group included 80 subjects (38 females and 42 males) with a mean age of 57 ± 12.4 years. Plasma arginine, NO levels, and arginase activity were measured. High-performance liquid chromatography, Griess reactions, and modifi ed Geyer and Dabich methods were used to detect the arginine levels, NO levels, and arginase activity.

Effect of Neutrophils on Nitric Oxide Production from Stimulated Macrophages
Background: During the initial phase of an infection, there is an upregulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase in the macrophages for the production of nitric oxide. This is followed by the recruitment of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (neutrophils) which release arginase. Arginase competes with inducible nitric oxide synthase for a common substrate L-arginine. Objective: To investigate whethe...
متن کاملO-8: Study of Peroxynitrite Levels, Arginase Activity and NO Synthase Activity in Seminal Plasma of Iraqi Leukocytospermic Patients
Background Leukocytes linked directly and indirectly to reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Although leukocytospermia is defined as the presence of ≥1×106 white blood cells/mL (WBC/mL) in a semen sample, the presence of less than 1×106 WBC/mL (low-level leukocytospermia) still can produce a detectable amount of ROS, impairing sperm function and lowering the chances of pregnancy. Low concen...
متن کاملArginase activity and nitric oxide levels may be considered as tumor markers in breast cancer
Article history: Received on: 06/08/2012 Revised on: 29/08/2012 Accepted on: 07/09/2012 Available online: 28/10/2012 To investigate the relationship of breast cancer with serum arginase activity and nitric oxide levels. Arginase (L-arginine ureohidrolase, EC. 3.5.3.1) is the last enzyme of urea cycle which converts arginine into urea and ornithine. nitric oxide, a product of L-arginine and nitr...
متن کاملDecreased systemic bioavailability of L-arginine in patients with cystic fibrosis
BACKGROUND L-arginine is the common substrate for nitric oxide synthases and arginases. Increased arginase levels in the blood of patients with cystic fibrosis may result in L-arginine deficiency and thereby contribute to low airway nitric oxide formation and impaired pulmonary function. METHODS Plasma amino acid and arginase levels were studied in ten patients with cystic fibrosis before and...
متن کاملDecreased arginine bioavailability and increased serum arginase activity in asthma.
Recent studies suggest that a nitric oxide (NO) deficiency and elevated arginase activity may play a role in the pathogenesis of asthma. Although much attention has been directed toward measurements of exhaled NO in asthma, no studies to date have evaluated levels of plasma arginase or arginine, the substrate for NO production, in patients with asthma. This study, therefore, measured amino acid...
